Women’s March Youth EMPOWER is calling for students, teachers, school administrators, parents and allies to take part in a #NationalSchoolWalkout for 17 minutes at 10am across every time zone on March 14, 2018 to protest Congress’ inaction to do more than tweet thoughts and prayers in response to the gun violence plaguing our schools and neighborhoods. We need action. Students and allies are organizing the national school walkout to demand Congress pass legislation to keep us safe from gun violence at our schools, on our streets and in our homes and places of worship.
FAQ’s
Why are we doing this?
We are living in an age where young people like us do not feel safe in our schools. This issue is personal for all of us, especially for those of us who are survivors of gun violence. We are walking out for ALL people who have experienced gun violence, including systemic forms of gun violence that disproportionately impact teens in Black and Brown communities. It is important that when we refer to gun violence, we do not overlook the impact of police brutality and militarized policing, or see police in schools as a solution. We also recognize the United States has exported gun violence through imperialist foreign policy to destabilize other nations. We raise our voices for action against all these forms of gun violence.
Why March 14?
March 14 is the one-month anniversary of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
Why 17 minutes?
The 17 minutes are in honor of the 17 lives taken in the tragedy in Parkland, Florida.

GLOBAL CLIMATE ACTION SUMMIT
Moscone Center South in San Francisco, California.
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2018 — FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2018
The Global Climate Action Summit will bring leaders and people together from around the world to “Take Ambition to the Next Level.” It will be a moment to celebrate the extraordinary achievements of states, regions, cities, companies, investors and citizens with respect to climate action.
It will also be a launchpad for deeper worldwide commitments and accelerated action from countries—supported by all sectors of society—that can put the globe on track to prevent dangerous climate change and realize the historic Paris Agreement.
The decarbonization of the global economy is in sight. Transformational changes are happening across the world and across all sectors as a result of technological innovation, new and creative policies and political will at all levels.
States and regions, cities, businesses and investors are leading the charge on pushing down global emissions by 2020, setting the stage to reach net zero emissions by midcentury.
ATTENDING THE SUMMIT
People everywhere are encouraged to participate in the hundreds of affiliate events taking place in the San Francisco Bay Area and throughout the world during the week of September 10-14th, including climate action panels, workshops, tours, exhibits and other special events. The full affiliate event schedule will be posted here this summer.
From September 12-14, you can virtually attend the Summit by streaming it live on YouTube, Facebook and Twitter. In person, Summit attendance for the plenary and other high-level sessions is by invitation and will require accreditation. If you represent an organization ready to make a major climate commitment at the Summit, please send details about that proposed announcement by clicking here.
The Global Climate Action Summit is also committed to reducing the environmental impact of the Summit event itself. To see how the Summit looks to meet or exceed international sustainability standards for large events, please click here.
At the heart of the Paris Climate Change Agreement is the commitment by national governments to review their progress and rachet up the ambition of national climate action plans, known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
The Global Climate Action Summit, happening midway between Paris 2015 and 2020, is timed to provide the confidence to governments to ‘step up’ and trigger this next level of ambition sooner rather than later.
The momentum we generate this year must lead to bending the curve of emissions down by 2020—science advises us that this gives the world the best opportunity to prevent the worst effects of climate change. 2018 therefore must be the beginning of a new phase of action and ambition on climate change.
The Summit will underscore the urgency of the threat of climate change by mobilizing the voices and experience of real people, in real communities already facing real and stark threats. It will challenge and channel the energy and idealism of people everywhere to step up and overcome it.
At the Summit, international and local leaders from states, regions, cities, businesses, investors and civil society—known as “non-party stakeholders/non-state actors”—will be joined by national government leaders, scientists, students, nonprofits and others in a new wave of mobilization.
They will be sharing what they have achieved to date and committing to doing more to usher in the era of decarbonization, greater levels of sustainability and prosperity for the many rather than the few.
These actors will also celebrate a range of new climate commitments under five key areas: Healthy Energy Systems, Inclusive Economic Growth, Sustainable Communities, Land and Ocean Stewardship and Transformative Climate Investments.
The confidence, enthusiasm and support generated by this wave of action now and through 2019, will embolden national governments leaders to trigger the necessary domestic processes ahead of 2020 while also triggering more states and regions, cities, businesses and investors to ‘step up’ further action themselves.

This powerful film serves as a warning sign of the impending threat of escalating regional war in the Middle East. With the increasing number of U.S. military bases and direct U.S. military involvement in the region, it is clear that our governmental officials as well as the public are not sufficiently informed in regards to the dynamics of the conflicts in the region. Enemies of Peace shines a spotlight on the instigators, aggressors and funders of these catastrophic wars as well as their motives. Featuring some of the most renowned scholars, journalists and activists on the subject, Enemies of Peace offers insights and solutions not often expressed by the mainstream media and serves to empower activists in helping to bring the principles of peace, justice, cooperation and diplomacy back into politics, international relations and the collective consciousness.

Militarism, violence, and war are pervasive in pop culture and the entertainment industry. The mainstream news media largely refuse to critique skyrocketing military spending and the vast negative impacts of perpetual warfare. Join World BEYOND War for our next free webinar featuring experts on the strained relationship between militarism and the media.
Militarism is the “elephant in the room,” says FAIR founder Jeff Cohen. Former TV pundit for MSNBC, CNN, and Fox, Jeff was fired for shedding light on the perils of U.S. interventionism and in particular, for opposing the invasion of Iraq on the air.
Rose Dyson, President of Canadians Concerned About Violence in Entertainment, expresses concern about the culture of war that is perpetuated by TV, music, video games, and social media. Popular culture glamorizes the use of guns, normalizing violence and conflict.
Tune in to our Militarism in the Media webinar with experts Rose Dyson and Jeff Cohen to discuss the role of media in promoting war and violence, and how, in turn, we can be peaceful advocates for a world BEYOND war.
PURPOSE AND INTENTION
Climate Change & Consciousness: Our Legacy for the Earth, April 20-26 2019, will be a collaborative and participatory investigation into how we can steward a sustainable future on what has already become a radically changed planet Earth. We have travelled to this ‘new’ planet on a burst of carbon dioxide. A new planet requires new ways of living.
The conference will bring together eminent scientists, wisdom keepers, business people, activists, artists, entrepreneurs, young people and others, to envision and begin to inhabit our joint future. It will be an international, inter-generational and multi-disciplinary gathering. This is the principle of ‘the big tent‘, borrowed from party politics, whereby diverse viewpoints, backgrounds and interests (the ‘voices in the room’) are brought together to engage and dialogue.
Floor plan of the Universal Hall, the main conference venue, with
a symbolic representation of the diversity of ‘voices in the room.’
Through interactive, embodied and experiential means, participants will access intuitive, intelligent and innovative insights into how we will meet the demands of this new world. Each individual will be invited to invoke their ‘Legacy for the Earth.’ Our combined roles and commitment will represent a global mission of stewardship. Everyone will be part of this love story.
Participants will collaborate in exploring:
- The science and truth of climate change in language that we can all comprehend;
- Ways to embody our longing to connect with the Earth and hear Her voice;
- How we can build and rebuild communities as functional entities;
- Political, legal and social activism, and networking for social change;
- How do we nurture children and support youth to restore our environment;
- Soil restoration, organic food production and community-scale agriculture;
- Alternative energy sources and appropriate technologies;
- Biodiversity and the intrinsic preciousness of all species;
- Racism, misogyny and gender bias – how they deepen the environmental crisis;
- Contemporary and traditional resources to address the trauma of climate change;
- What can we learn from indigenous cultures, activists and wisdom keepers;
- Healthcare and the detoxification of environmental pollutants and toxins; and
- How to generate inspiration for a grassroots upsurge to reclaim our future.
THREE MAJOR ORIENTATIONS
Three major threads running though the conference will be:
- AWAKE: Facing the truths of climate change.
- CELEBRATE: Using the arts to express our love for the Earth and all life.
- ACT: Developing our response, locally and globally.
TEN GUIDING PRINCIPLES OF CCC19
These principles were received along with the guidance for the manifestation of CLIMATE CHANGE & CONSCIOUSNESS on November 8, 2016:
1. That the gathering be a grassroots representation of diverse global populations;
2. That the gathering be held at the Findhorn Foundation due to its origins and because it represents and embodies community and sustainability;
3. That indigenous environmental leaders be represented;
4. That youth play a significant role and that their voices be heard;
5. That all participants, both at the conference and online, be encouraged to connect, engage, contribute and network.
6. That everyone at the gathering have an opportunity to establish and cultivate a direct, intimate and personal relationship with Nature;
7. That the gathering be infused with art as one of the key celebrations of human creativity and resiliency;
8. That the outcome of the gathering be the creation of networks of innovation and communities of inspired action;
9. That these networks and community initiatives be seeded before the conference begins; and,
10. That they be effectively supported to grow and flourish after the conference ends, in order to accelerate the generation of sustainable, life-serving responses to climate change.
WHY THIS CONFERENCE IS UNIQUE
While words like ‘climate change’ and ‘sustainability’ are in the popular parlance, the truth about the magnitude of our environmental predicament is not well understood. This is in part because the language used to deliver the science is frequently infused with acronyms that deter engagement. This conference will translate scientific jargon into language that is accessible to anyone. In addition, we intend a celebratory response to climate change that emphasises human resilience and creativity, which is key to coping with the scientific reality. These two sides of the coin (environmental science and celebratory resilience) will be linked at every juncture of this gathering.
This conference will be led by some of the most knowledgeable and highly regarded voices of the climate change movement. The key contributors are recognised internationally for their expertise, their commanding presence, and their proven capacity to identify practical and optimistic strategies for sustainability action. Joining these voices with those of artists, healers, parents and youth has seldom been attempted in quite such a way.
YOUTH
We are planning (although it’s funding dependant), a separate youth programme that will run parallel to the conference. Youth aged 16 – 20 will form a contingent that will join with, and present to, the entire assembly. Their ideas will be woven into an action plan that is developed for follow through after the event. The intention will be to permeate schools and social media with viable options for surviving and thriving in a climate-changing world.
LIVE STREAMING
There will be live streaming from Findhorn of most of the conference programme (details to follow). Aside from individual subscriptions to the streaming, we are encouraging organisations (such as community groups, non-profits, institutions and companies) to subscribe to the streaming as a collective, or hub. Hubs will take the opportunity to do much more than just passively watch the streaming. We will encourage them to self-organise a mini-conference of their own, whereby they hold their own in-house discussion groups, panel sessions, workshops and so on. We envisage these hubs becoming cells of impassioned and empowered activists who sustain their climate activism into the future.
Interested in forming a hub? Please contact us or email: CCC19@findhorn.org.
WHY FINDHORN?
The Findhorn Foundation and Community are a renown ecovillage, spiritual community and learning centre (See blog post here). This conference comes at a time when the art of community building is badly needed. Findhorn famously demonstrates the potential of community to develop low-impact settlements and lifestyles. Further, Findhorn’s deep roots in the natural world and 50 years of ‘co-creation with the intelligence of nature’ makes it the perfect host for this event.
The central intention of Climate Change & Consciousness is to encourage the participants (including thousands watching by live-stream) to prioritise their love for the Earth, putting the environment first in order to steward for the children of the future. This epitomises the role that Findhorn has long played in raising consciousness for the good of the whole. This conference fulfils Findhorn’s essential purpose as a lighthouse beaming forth messages from Mother Nature.

“The Empowered Elder: EAN’s Foundation Workshop gives a superb overview of what EAN is about as well as going into depth, especially through the varied, imaginative, and potentially transformative experiential exercises, as well as the rich resources. You will emerge more knowledgeable and wiser — not only about what Elders Action Network really means but also about how you want to embrace your elderhood and contribute to making our world and earth a better home for our great, great grandchildren. This workshop will be valuable for EAN “old-timers” as well as new members.“
—Meg Newhouse, Passion & Purpose LifeCrafting,
founder of the Life Planning Network, EAN “old-timer”
“This workshop lays the foundation for our thinking, acting and being needed to preserve all life for all future time. If there is one course that says everything about everything, this is it. In a world exploding with information, how do we decide what to let in…This gives participants the keys to what’s important and a method by which to choose.”

Welcome to the Self-Study version of Living the New Story Series 2 !
Our live journey ran from September 2018 to April 2019 and each of the 8 videoconferencing sessions were recorded.
Throughout the eight sessions, we are inviting you to take an experiential journey into what needs to change in us, and in the human story. Each session will explore, at increasing levels of depth, what it is to live the new story personally, and accelerate it collectively, through:
-
Understanding our own personal journey inside of our larger, collective story of human evolution.
-
Awakening to ourselves as dynamic, inspired agents of change and learning how to powerfully cocreate the future of our world in a way that is uniquely ours.
-
Catalysing our growth and evolution beyond the patterns and core beliefs of our past to make way for the new story to unfold.
-
Honouring the best of the old story and integrating it into the new.
-
Connecting with, and beginning to harness, the power of the collective field to carry the new story forward.
As we change our story, we change our world
We humans find our way by story. Our stories shape us, hold us and give meaning to our lives. Every so often it becomes clear that a prevailing story is no longer serving. Now is such a time. Humanity needs a new, inspiring picture of the future to live into.
This website is designed to support the emergence of a coherent new story for humanity and the production of practical, collaborative ways to live this new story.
We invite you to help us accelerate our collective understanding of what the ‘world in waiting’ holds for us, what is already emerging and what needs to change, both in us and in the human story.
As a first step in this journey already begun by others, the Findhorn Foundation gifted to the world – The New Story Summit: Inspiring Pathways for our Planetary Future –which was held from 27 September to 3 October 2014…a gift economy gathering of the human family to experience planetary community, draw on our collective intelligence and co-create a story to inspire us all.
The Summit was more than full so we know there is huge support and longing for a new way to live together – a way which honours ancient wisdom and the interconnected whole living system of which we, the Earth and the cosmos are all part. It’s all connected and we are all accountable. To find out more, visit our Summit page.
This online hub will continue to be just that – a hub for people from all over the world to meet, engage, collaborate, share information, dream, synergise and inspire each other to live a new story.
If you would like to join this wave of collaborative action to shift consciousness and build on the threads of a new story already being lived and experimented with, you are very welcome. We invite your engagement, transparency, trust, compassion, innovation, entrepreneurship and generosity of spirit

COURSE OVERVIEW
We CAN do this! We can rebuild soil, replenish water cycles, and reverse global warming.
Humans have been living in a degenerative relationship with nature, expecting our world to be “used up” to provide our needs and now, the majority of the solutions to the biggest global crisis have been incomplete because we are stuck in a reaction to our degenerative relationship and focused on “doing less harm” in the personal or policy measures.
Sustainability alone will not save the planet because we’ve already caused too much degradation. Our solutions must match the scale of the problem, we must become regenerative. The good news is, we can.
When we begin to make global changes that affect grand inflection points, like the way our food is grown and sourced, we can start to heal our world from the soil up, sequestering carbon as we go, replenishing water sources, and healing our communities.
But the movement begins with you
and your advocacy…
The journey to healing our planet

Join this all-levels advocacy course for free from September 9-25.
Sustainability is no longer an option.
We have to DRAWDOWN the carbon in our atmosphere. We have to REGENERATE our land back to health. Regenerative Agriculture, which blends modern discoveries in soil biology with indigenous wisdom, is one of the biggest solutions of our time. And yet, it is just starting to come into the conversation.
This course will teach you how to be a knowledgeable, inspiring advocate for this powerful solution!

Our mission is to create a global wellness community around the ideas and practices of the world’s greatest teachers.
The true beauty of our community here can be summed up in that very word. Living in community allows us to grow in our connection to ourselves, to our world, and to each other — but it also comes with challenges. How do I smooth over disagreements? How do I see the other side of the situation? How do I serve the greater good, when that means denying myself?
Surrender to the situation, lean into acceptance.

My perspective may not be your perspective, but both are essential parts of our shared happiness, joy, and success. By embracing the truth of what is and who we are, from all angles, we can honor each other with clear and open minds.

HOW WE CAN BEGIN TO HEAL OUR BROKEN WORLD |
For more than 26 years, I’ve been helping individuals and communities creatively navigate difficult transitions — such as loss of a loved one, livelihood, illness, or bursting forth of a life unlived, the collective trauma of community disaster — through story-making. I’m now finishing a book — a combination memoir and workbook — about my healing story approach. Not since 9/11, have I felt such urgency to put my work in service to healing our national culture. For the next year and half, I’m going to be offering more community reconciliation programs to counter-attack the hate and violence-filled narratives that the Administration and its minions are flooding media with. I’m targeting my programs now to change-makers: healers, writers, storytellers, teachers, activists. Here’s the mistake many are making: Focusing on Trump’s media grabs day after day. This only gives energy to his evil and distracts from the fact that millions of citizens support him as a cult – meaning a disregard for facts in favor of allegiance to a leader that makes false promises, but is interested only in expanding his own power and wealth. But how can we pull followers out of this cult? Not by judging, preaching, haranguing. Rather by listening, engaging, finding non-political common ground, by sharing our stories – not our victim tales, but a deeper story that is always flowing like a river beneath the surface of our lives – where we are one people, one race, one blood. On Sept. 10, at 8 pm eastern, I’m going to be offering a free introduction to a 3-step healing story process for people who would like to use story in their community, therapeutic, or classroom programs, but may not know how. That’s Tuesday, Sept. 10 at 8 pm eastern time. To register and receive the link, write to me at juIietbrucephd@gmail.com. |
Enjoy the rest of your summer, |

Campaign Nonviolence was created to help unite movements and build peace by working to end war, poverty, racism and environmental destruction.
Since 2014 tens of thousands of people have joined Campaign Nonviolence (CNV) every September marching for peace, racial justice, economic equality and environmental healing. Now, we are gearing up for another powerful nationwide mobilization September 14-22 — please join us!
Over 2,660 marches, rallies, workshops and other public events took place in all 50 states and 25 countries last September. This year we will build on this growing movement by bringing all of our issues together in the same week coast to coast and around the world — and calling with one voice for a nonviolent culture that works for everyone.

Article 26 requires the UN to facilitate disarmament ‘in order to promote the establishment and maintenance of international peace and security with the least diversion for armaments of the world’s human and economic resources.’
More recently the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development recognizes that there can be no sustainable development without peace, and no peace without sustainable development. In addition, Securing our Common Future: An Agenda for Disarmament, the disarmament agenda released in 2018 by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, outlines the links between disarmament and many of the SDGs.

Transition Thrive Online Training
Thursday, September 26, 2019 – 11:00am – Thursday, November 21, 2019 – 12:30pm
All times Pacific. We are currently offering two registration options through this page: a $120 Standard Ticket to cover the basic costs of producing this course and a $180 Sponsor Ticket to help subsidize scholarships. If you would like to request a need-based scholarship or group discount, please contact don@transitionus.org
Transition Thrive can be thought of as the sequel to Transition Launch Training. While Launch focuses on the first few steps of the Transition process – understanding the global context, forming an initiating group, raising awareness, and cultivating partnerships with like-minded organizations – Thrive builds upon this foundation to provide answers to how to broaden, deepen, and scale up the impacts of local community resilience-building initiatives over time.
Over the course of eight weekly sessions, you will form mutually-supportive relationships with other participants, develop new abilities and knowledge, receive guidance for overcoming the specific challenges you are facing, and create a robust action plan to take your work to the next level.
Prior participation in a Transition Launch Training is recommended, but not required. This course is open to social change activists from all over the world, but is currently only available in English.
Sessions at a Glance
1. Maps for the Transition Journey (October 3): Identify your initiative’s current strengths and weaknesses using the Transition Healthcheck and explore how The Five Stages of Transition can provide an achievable path to thriving.
2. Cultivating the Collective Genius (October 10): In this session, we will look closely at our individual wholeness and unique collaboration styles while exploring ways of cultivating these so that the collective genius in our groups is more likely to emerge.
3. Running Successful, Practical Projects (October 17): This session will share design ideas for projects that bring tangible benefits to your community, engage and energize volunteers, and support working groups to be effective and rewarding.
4. Reaching Beyond the Choir (October 24): Learn how to create a tipping point of support for your initiative and cultivate strategic partnerships by telling your best stories, harvesting metrics, and designing value propositions.
5. Building Momentum and Capacity (October 31): In this session, we will cover running larger campaigns, forming diverse coalitions, taking a multi-faceted approach to fundraising, and establishing a healthy formal organization.
6. System-Changing Strategies (November 7): This session will explore the mindsets, practices, and structures that support community-wide and whole systems strategies, such as creating localized food systems or transforming local economies.
7. In It for Life (November 14): Here, we will discuss some of the unique challenges we encounter as long-term change-makers, and will suggest tools, mindsets, inner postures, and practices that help us stay inspired and prevent burnout.
8. Bringing It All Back Home (November 21): In this final session, we will circle back to the Transition Healthcheck to harvest key insights from this course, address major challenges, and create an action plan for your group to thrive!
How Does It Work?
Thrive Online consists of a series of eight pre-recorded presentations that will be made available for you to watch before engaging in weekly 90-minute live videoconferences exploring each of these topics in greater depth. We will also provide you with access to a private discussion forum that you can use to share resources and continue conversations in between sessions.
Please don’t worry if you don’t consider yourself to be tech-savvy. The platforms we use are designed to be easy to navigate, and we will provide personalized technical assistance throughout the course to ensure that your experience is as enjoyable as humanly possible.
While this online format enables you to participate in an international learning cohort from the comfort of your own home – at a lower cost and with a smaller carbon footprint than traditional face-to-face offerings – if you’d prefer to host a Thrive Training in your local community, please click here to learn more about how to do that.

I’m ShaRon Rea and I’m thrilled you’re here!
After years of helping hundreds of parents regain their confidence after a breakup or divorce, my clients tell me how glad they were to work with me. They just couldn’t read another co-parenting self-help book!
Let me be your personal guide. Discover how you too can experience more success managing the day to day challenges of co-parenting. Learn how to anticipate problems before they escalate and stop making decisions from desperation. The Co-Parenting Course increases your parenting skills and inspires you to try new things to build a high-quality future for you and your children.
Who Is The Co-Parenting Course For?
This course is for divorced, separated and single parents. You can take control for yourself and the kids, even if the other parent is not willing. This course is also for grandparents, foster parents and any adult caring for children of divorce.
In the United States and abroad, courts mandate divorcing parents take a class. The court ordered classes give parents a foundation, but in the months and years after the court classes have ended, parents still struggle to find peace. Conflicting opinions about what’s best for the kids, and so many other arguments, stop effective co-parenting from becoming a reality for many families.
In The Co-Parenting Course, I deliver the next level of support to parents so they can deal more successfully with conflict, have patience with the ups and downs of their children’s behavior and turn their focus to solutions instead of staying stuck in the problems.

A Four Week Online Course with Dr. Kenneth Rose
Virtual Reality, Māyā,
and Yoga’s Virtual Bodies
Tues, Mar 3, 10, 17, 24 (7-9:00 pm EST)
Course Description
Everyday life is rapidly going virtual, and we are experiencing the vaporization of physical reality as technology rapidly evolves. Apps are displacing shopping malls, and crude single-player video games have morphed into massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs). This rapid virtualization of physical reality leads MIT computer scientist Rizwan Virk to suggest in The Simulation Hypothesis that we may be living in an MMORPG without knowing it.
If we are living in a hypnotic simulation controlled by beings greater than us but unknown by us, can we develop a powerful video game to break through to reality? Perhaps, but we would remain dependent upon machinery to awaken—like always needing a meditation app to meditate. Humanity’s mystical traditions teach that we are master simulators of our own experience—with or without machinery—and that it is our choice to sleep or to wake up.
In this course, we will unfold the classic Panchakosha, or Five-Bodies Teaching, from the Upaniṣads to realize the mystical depth in human life. This ancient teaching shows us how to perceive the multiple subtle or virtual bodies that cover up our ordinary consciousness. As we enter more deeply into this teaching over the four weeks of this course, we will also learn how to dismantle these virtual bodies and return to our inborn standpoint of natural enlightenment.
Students who take this course will learn:
The difference between virtual, augmented, and simulated reality
How Hinduism’s Five-Bodies Teaching uncovers the multiple bodies that cover our naturally illumined consciousness
How to use the natural technology of meditation
How the Simulation Hypothesis mirrors ancient teachings about māyā and illusion
How to enter deeper stages of meditation
How to perceive and pass beyond the five bodies that enclose our true Self
COURSE INCLUDES:
4 Live, Interactive Zoom Sessions
4 Q&As with Kenneth
4 Downloadable Videos & MP3s
Course Readings
10 Embodied Philosophy Credits
10 Yoga Alliance Cont. Ed. Credits
Private Pop-Up Facebook Group
Course Outline

The Ribbon 2020 – Tangible Hope for No Nuclear War
The Ribbon was founded by Justine Merritt who had visited Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum in 1982. She was greatly affected by the tragedy caused by the Atomic Bomb. After arriving home, it came to her to create a Ribbon, and decided to have a Ribbon event on the 40th memorial anniversary of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
It was in the middle of the Cold War between The United States and The Soviet Union, and using nuclear weapons could happen again at a moments notice.
On August 4, 1985, in Washington, D.C., fifteen miles of Ribbons encircled the Pentagon and other important monuments: With the message of “What I cannot bear to think of as lost forever in a nuclear war”. The Atomic Bomb Dome in Hiroshima was also encircled.
The Ribbon International is now a Non Governmental Organization in Association with the United Nations. Since 1985, many Ribbons have been created around the world. People carry Ribbons and pray for Peace at many occasions such as; community memorial gatherings and marches related to nuclear, peace and environmental issues. Ribbons have been exhibited in various places as well.
Nowadays the world is closer to the tragedy of nuclear war or a nuclear accident more than ever before.
On August 1st 2020, the 75th Anniversary of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, The Ribbon International is planning to have a Ribbon event in New York City and in other cities around the world. Please join us, and pray for a world without nuclear weapons and never another nuclear tragedy. (If you cannot join, please pray with us wherever you are.)

How to make Ribbon
(Please also see our website: www.theribboninternational.org)
- Cut a panel of sturdy cloth, double thickness, of any color.
- Finished size: one meter by a half meter (or one yard by a half yard)
- Sew 20cm (9 inch) pieces of ribbon to each corner so the panels may be easily tied together.
- On this panel, sew, paint, write, embroider, weave, knit, tie-dye or use any other kind of ornaments to express what you most love about the world and want to protect from what is endangered on this earth.
- If you wish, write your name and/or any message on the back of the panel.

Pieces to Peace,
There will be no check-in table in Arlington in August
with an aging, greying teacher with a red Bic pen
waiting to grade assignments for more than ten miles of Ribbon.
All the pieces belong there:
all the symbols of a nation’s yearning for peace.
Who would want to judge the pieces?
Choose one as better than another?
Work of Art?
Work of heart?
Who would want to judge the pieces?
Lay aside a child’s rain-touched, felt tipped rainbow
for an artist’s gessoed work?
Who would want to say the eighth-grader’s acrylic basketball court
held more promise that the quilter’s careful stitches
holding her aching heart together after the evening’s late news?
Each one makes The Ribbon:
the pizza, poison ivy, pomegranate seeds
the ladybugs, mid-Hudson bridge,
poetry,
and creed;
each segment makes The Ribbon.
It is in the addition we find the sum:
for it is one yard
plus one yard
plus each yard of cloth
that we honor the diversity,
that we celebrate the unity.
Each piece makes The Ribbon;
each piece brings the piece.
Amen
