Earth Month is a convergence of events, broadcasts and other activities starting with the Original Earth Day on the Equinox March 20th (World Happiness Day), including World Water Day March 22nd, World Meteorological Day March 23rd, and continuing through April 22nd (Earth Day celebrated), and culminating with the Peoples Climate March on March 29th. Unleashing the African Woman Thato Angelina Gabaitse Founder and Director Gabarone, Botswana Unleashing the African woman is a program aimed and designed to train groups of vulnerable women across Botswana. The mission of this program is to empower women to take full control of their lives. The program is designed to bring out the beautiful, strong and compassionate goddess in every woman.
This program strives to achieve this goal by developing the woman’s mindset through the building of leadership, life and entrepreneurial skills. This will be achieved through training conducted for 30 weeks through a body, mind and soul transformation journey with counseling, training on the development of a wholesome and holistic childhood foundation through love, abundance, and joy. Other activities include arts & crafts, theatre & dance, and gardening. Currently we are mobilizing resources to launch the program in partnership with YWCA Botswana (Young Women’s Christian Association), an organization that gives teen mothers the opportunity to continue with their secondary education while their babies are enrolled in the day care centre within the institution!

You are invited to participate in the FIRST ANNUAL International Women’s Day Drumming Circle.
Our planet needs healing. One way we can help it to heal is by raising its vibration and a great way to do that is through drumming. So you are being invited to form and/or participate in a drumming circle on March 8 and 9, 2019 wherever you are on the planet.
This is an experiment! We want to see if we can get the whole world drumming during the same 2-day period of time, what positive healing effect it will have on our beloved Mother Earth.
We would like to keep track of how many circles are participating throughout the world, so we ask you to register your circle on this site. When we receive your registration, we will post the name of your circle and your circle’s location on this site. We hope you will participate!
Note: A drumming circle can consist of any number of participants. If you are drumming by yourself, that counts. Simply visualize yourself adding your energy by joining in the Global Drumming Circle!

The mission of the Nolumbeka Project is to promote a deeper, broader and more accurate depiction of the history of the Native Americans/American Indians of New England before and during European contact and colonization;
To protect and preserve sites sacred to, and of historic value to, the Native Americans/American Indians of New England; to create and promote related educational opportunities, preservation projects and cultural events; and to work in partnership, as much as possible, with the tribes.

The Nolumbeka Project, Inc. is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of the history of Native Americans/American Indians of New England through educational programs, art, history, music, heritage seed preservation and cultural events. We are actively building, maintaining and expanding an historical archive research library for use by the Tribes and Educators of the Northeast and beyond.

UPSTANDER PROJECT
The Upstander Project produced DAWNLAND. The filmmaking and educational collaborative was created in Boston, Massachusetts in 2009 is to challenge indifference to injustice and raise awareness of the need for upstanders, especially among teachers and their students. We help bystanders learn the skills of upstanders and contribute to action-oriented campaigns in response to vital social issues.
The Upstander Project’s flagship program presented with the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center at the University of Connecticut is the Upstander Academy. The Upstander Academy is an inquiry-based professional development opportunity for secondary educators with a focus on genocide and human rights education to foster upstanding and address complex historical and current issues. The Academy is six days (Sunday through Friday) and is based at the University of Connecticut-Storrs. Additionally, Academy participants will spend time on sacred Tribal lands, including the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center, home of our principal partner.
Since 2009 we have used documentary film, teacher professional development, and interactive educator resources to teach about colonialism and genocide and address how we deal with difference in our society. Our first project is anchored by COEXIST (broadcast in April 2014 on PBS World Channel) and its extensive Teacher’s Guide. The film examines Rwanda’s unprecedented social experiment in government-mandated reconciliation through the stories of survivors and perpetrators of the 1994 genocide.

Adam Mazo is the director of the Upstander Project and co-director and producer of First Light, and the feature-length film, Dawnland. Adam also directed and produced Coexist (WORLD Channel, Africa Movie Academy Award Nominee). He co-founded the Upstander Project in 2009. He is originally from Minnesota, graduated from the University of Florida, and now lives in Boston with his wife and son.

Mishy Lesser, Ed.D., is the learning director for the Upstander Project and Education Fellow at the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center at the University of Connecticut. She is director of the Upstander Academy, a weeklong professional learning experience for teachers and museum educators that focuses on genocide and human rights education and the skills of upstanders. Currently Dr. Lesser spends much of her time researching and writing the five-inquiry Teacher’s Guide for Dawnland. Mishy authored the Coexist Teacher’s Guide to promote learning about the complexity of reconciliation in post-genocide Rwanda. She is a Circle Keeper and has been featured on WBUR (Boston) and PRI/BBC’s The World. Mishy was a Fulbright Scholar in Ecuador and spent 12 years learning and working in the Andes.

Tracy Rector (Choctaw/Seminole) is the impact producer for Dawnland and the Upstander Project. She is a mixed race filmmaker, curator, community organizer, co-founder of Longhouse Media. She has made over 400 short films, and is currently in production of her fifth feature documentary. Her work has been featured on Independent Lens, Cannes Film Festival, ImagineNative, National Geographic, Toronto International Film Festival, and in the Smithsonian’s Museum of the American Indian. She is a current Firelight Media Lab Fellow, WGBH Producer Fellow, and Sundance Institute Lab Fellow. Raised in Seattle and Albuquerque, Tracy lives in Seattle and sits as a City of Seattle Arts Commissioner.

In cooperation with the WE-Energime-Global Cooperation Turtle Island International Civil Society Organization and in support of peaceful interfaith dialogue, especially in light of Laudato Si, the recent message from Pope Francis on “Care for Mother Earth”, Drawdown Markham will be assisting Global Cooperation Day (GCD, New Zealand) to Celebrate the 800 year Anniversary (in 2019) of the meeting between Saint Francis of Assisi and Sultan Al Kamil in the year 1219 by planting a *Commemorative Tree of Peace* on a property in the East end of Markham (Locust Hill) on Sunday, September 15th.
This event is being done in support of the DD Markham CCAH Collaborative Exchange Project (CEP) and the “Spark for Humanity” project by We Are Mother Earth! (WAME) and GTI Enterprises (cooperative corporation), and for the eventual establishment of our “Go Local” Campaign for community resilience and adaptation, supported by our local Drawdown Markham Interfaith Neighborhood and Business Collaborative (which is part of the EncounterCanada collaborative, which is intended “to localize the Sustainable Development Goals to build ‘Climate Smart’ safe and sustainable communities and cities, pursuant to the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction”).
The Grandmothers are getting ready to travel to New York next month to celebrate the Grandmothers Wisdom book launch and then we will travel to upstate New York for a historical event at Menla, LIFT THE EARTH, where we will be joined by other spiritual leaders.

The Earth is our loving grandmother. For all time, Cheyenne storytellers, generation after generation, have repeated this belief with both their minds and their hearts. As they say, The Great One, Everywhere Spirit, created the universe and all life with power so vast it defies human imagination. Entirely with the force of thought, the four powerful spirit beings came into existence to witness creation and to eventually safeguard and shelter all life, especially human beings. Next came the water of life, the fire and light of the sun, the infinite sky air, and compassionate Earth. The Great One, Everywhere Spirit, contemplated creation and thought the Earth to be the most beautiful of all, then declared that the Earth be known as our grandmother.
Grandmother Earth is also, more commonly, referred to as Mother Earth. Indeed, she is first woman, first mother, first teacher, oldest mother, and oldest grandmother. The Thirteen Indigenous Grandmothers whose magnificent lives are encapsulated in the work of this book represent Earth’s titanic spirit, power, beauty, and love. Individually and collectively, they are rooted in the Earth and carry her wisdom as a perpetual trust. They are committed to sustaining their Earth home and to educating and defending the hearts of all the world’s children.

Building Power: Women’s Leadership in the Fight for Justice, Democracy, and Fair Work
Major trends and disruptions are altering the world around us. Threats to human rights and labor rights defenders, closing civic space, automation’s impact on the future of work, and the underlying conditions leading to the #MeToo movement are real challenges to ensuring a fair global economy that works for everyone. However, against these threats there are significant efforts underway to build power, set standards, and ultimately to ensure economic and social justice in communities across the world.
At the frontlines of this fight are incredible women who are paving the way for reforms in law, policy, and practice. These leaders understand that to truly course correct we need to build power and work in collaboration. This event will both celebrate their achievements and reflect on what’s worked—and what needs more support—in the fight for justice, democracy, and fair work for all.
Speakers:
- Sharan Burrow is the General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation and a former president of the Australian Council of Trade Unions. She is the first woman to become General Secretary of the ITUC since its foundation in 2006, and was the second woman to become president of the ACTU.
- Liz Shuler is an American labor activist and, since 2009, Secretary-Treasurer of the AFL-CIO. She is the first woman and the youngest person to hold the position of Secretary-Treasurer and is the highest-ranking woman in the labor federation’s history.
- Anannya Bhattacharjee is the International Coordinator of Asia Floor Wage Alliance, a global supply chain campaign for living wages and a violence-free workplace for garment workers in Asia who are mostly women and who produce most of the world’s clothing. She is one of the few women trade unionists in India and has helped build grassroots labor-related collaboration between North America, Europe and Asia for well over a decade.
- Maricarmen Molina is the General Secretary of the Confederación Sindical de Trabajadores y Trabajadoras de El Salvador – CSTS, one of the largest trade union confederations in El Salvador.
- Liduvina Magarin, an attorney and longtime public servant, is Executive Director of the Center for Worker and Migrant Integration / Centro de Integración para Migrantes, Trabajadores y Trabajadoras (CIMITRA) based in San Salvador, El Salvador. She is the former Vice Minister for Salvadorans Living Abroad for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of El Salvador, and has held posts in the Legislative Assembly and Legal Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs covering investment, immigration, health, and the environment.

Located in the ancestral Tewa homelands of Northern New Mexico, Tewa Women United is a multicultural and multiracial organization founded and led by Native women.

Our Beginnings
Tewa Women United (TWU) started in 1989 as a support group for women from the Pueblos of the northern Rio Grande concerned with the traumatic effects of colonization, religious inquisition, and militarization leading to issues such as alcoholism, suicide, domestic/sexual violence and environmental violence. In the safe space we created, we transformed and empowered one another through critical analysis and by embracing and reaffirming our cultural identity.
In 2001 we transitioned from an informal, all volunteer group to a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
Tewa Women United was incorporated for educational, social and benevolent purposes, specifically for the ending of all forms of violence against Native Women and girls, Mother Earth and to promote peace in New Mexico.

The MAKA WICAHPI WICOHAN manual was inducted into the Smithsonian Institution during a formal ceremony on September 26, 1999 and the manual was also donated to the A.R.E. Library on September 22, 2002.
Chief Golden Light Eagle will be sharing about the 11:11, 12:12, and 13:13 teachings featured in the books that he authored through the guidance of spirit and ceremony.

Washington politics got you down? Try some laughter therapy. The Capitol Steps are America’s premiere political-musical-satire troupe. Their newest show, “The Lyin’Kings,” will find all the laughs amidst the current buffoonery in our nation’s capital. This is the group that puts the “MOCK” in Democracy! Originally made up of congressional staffers, the company is now an ensemble of finely-tuned musical theater professionals from around the country. They were nominated for the Drama Desk Awards in 2007 for “Outstanding Lyrics.”
“The Lyin’ Kings” draws its humor from today’s headlines and twitter feeds. It includes the latest songs about the Democratic primary candidates (“76 Unknowns”) and the newest late-night thoughts from President Trump (“Tweet It”). No one knows whom 2020 will bring to the forefront, but whether it’s Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez or Beto O’Rourke, the Capitol Steps will rhyme it. This new show, in formation until it opens, may serve up such delicacies as Donald Trump singing a rock song, Bernie Sanders singing a show tune or Vladimir Putin dancing shirtless. You’ll never know whether Nancy Pelosi, William Barr or Kim Jong-Un might appear onstage together in a musical number. There may even be a few golden oldies from the Obama and Bush eras.

- Angela P. Dodson, Author, Remember the Ladies: Celebrating Those Who Fought for Freedom at the Ballot Box (Center Street Press, 2017): Angela P. Dodson is author of “Remember the Ladies: Celebrating Those Who Fought for Freedom at the Ballot Box” about the woman suffrage movement in the United States and women’s political gains up to the present. Dodson is also an independent editor, writer and consultant. She founded an editorial services company, Editorsoncall LLC, in 2012, to link freelancers to clients in need of writing, editing, graphic and photographic services. She earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism at Marshall University and a master’s degree in journalism and public affairs from the American University. Angela is a former senior editor and former Style editor for the New York Times. She has most recently been an online editor and book reviewer for DIVERSE: Issues In Higher Education, diverseeducation.com, and diversebooks.net. She is the former executive editor of Black Issues Book Review.
- Dr. Carol Lasser, Emerita Professor of History, Oberlin College: Carol Lasser is Emerita Professor of History at Oberlin College and former president of the Society for the History of the Early American Republic (SHEAR). At Oberlin she taught about women, gender and race in American history, and chaired the History Department and the Gender, Sexuality and Feminist Studies Program. Her books include Antebellum American Women (with Stacey Robertson, 2010); Friends and Sisters: Letters Between Lucy Stone and Antoinette Brown Blackwell, 1846-1893, (with Marlene Merrill, 1987), Educating Men and Women Together: Coeducation in a Changing World (1987), and, most recently, with Gary Kornblith, Elusive Utopia: The Struggle for Racial Equality in Oberlin, Ohio (Louisiana State University Press 2018). Her articles address topics ranging from Civil War courtship to utopianism to the scholarship of teaching and learning. With students, she created Digitizing American Feminisms: Projects from the Oberlin College Archives (http://americanfeminisms.org/), featuring materials that bring feminist history alive. Her current projects include ongoing research on the life Lethia Cousins Fleming (1876-1963), a Cleveland woman of color who pursued a pioneering political career in the first half of the twentieth century. Professor Lasser is also rethinking the racial implications of the Nineteenth Amendment in her work-in-progress, “Bending to the Color Line: The Fight for Woman Suffrage in Ohio,” and she continues her work exploring Oberlin history, focusing on racial inequality in employment, public schools, housing and recreation from the 1930s to the 1980s. She earned her B.A. at the University of Pennsylvania and her Ph.D. at Harvard University.
- Dr. Ben Railton, Professor of English Studies and Coordinator of American Studies, Fitchburg State University: Ben Railton is Professor of English Studies and Coordinator of American Studies at Fitchburg State University in Massachusetts. He is the author of five books, most recently We the People: The 500-Year Battle over Who is American (Rowman and Littlefield’s American Ways series). He also writes the daily American Studies blog, contributes the bimonthly Considering History column to the Saturday Evening Post, and is the Boston Chapter Leader for the Scholars Strategy Network.
- Moderator: Tamika Nunley, Assistant Professor of History, Oberlin College: Tamika Nunley is an assistant professor of American history. Her research and teaching interests include slavery, gender, 19th-century legal history, digital history, and the American Civil War. At Oberlin, she created the History Design Lab that allows students to develop scholarly projects that involve methodological approaches that range from digital humanities, exhibit design, oral history, podcasts, historical fiction, and public history. Her book manuscript, ‘‘At the Threshold of Liberty: Women, Slavery, and the Boundaries of Freedom in Washington, D.C.,’’ examines how black women strategically used the laws, geography, and community networks of the nation’s capital to make claims to liberty during the Civil War era. Her work has been supported by the Andrew W. Mellon and Woodrow Wilson foundations as well as the American Association of University Women.

- Dr. Molly Rozum, Associate Professor and Director of Graduate Studies, The University of South Dakota (Vermillion, SD): Molly P. Rozum, Ph.D., is the co-editor (with Lori Ann Lahlum) of Equality at the Ballot Box: Votes for Women on the Northern Great Plains, published by South Dakota Historical Society Press (2019). The volume includes her article, “Citizenship, Civilization, and Property: The 1890 South Dakota Vote on Woman Suffrage and Indian Suffrages.” Rozum is Associate Professor and Ronald R. Nelson Chair of Great Plains and South Dakota History at The University of South Dakota, Vermillion and teaches the histories of South Dakota, and the Great Plains, and the American West, and Modern Women’s History. Rozum grew up in Mitchell, South Dakota.
- Dr. Lori Ann Lahlum, Professor, Department of History, Minnesota State University, Mankato (Mankato, MN): Lori Ann Lahlum is professor of history at Minnesota State University, Mankato, where she teaches courses on the American West, Minnesota history, and western women’s and gender history. She and Molly Rozum edited Equality at the Ballot Box: Votes for Women on the Northern Great Plains, which came out with South Dakota Historical Press in 2019. Lahlum also publishes on Norwegian America.
- Dr. Virginia Caruso, Historian and Member, Board of Trustees, Historical Society of Michigan (Plainwell, MI): Virginia Paganelli Caruso retired in 2001 after 34 years of teaching history at 4-year liberal arts colleges, and community colleges. She holds graduate degrees from the University of Michigan where she received her MA, has a Specialist in the Arts degree from Western Michigan University, and her PhD from Michigan State University. Her interest in both Michigan and Women’s History dates back to early 1981 when she discovered that the standard texts on Michigan History were inconsistent about when women in Michigan achieved equal suffrage. Focusing on this topic for her dissertation, she has been researching and talking about Woman Suffrage, voting rights, voting in Michigan, and the political activism of women ever since. She currently serves on the board of the Historical Society of Michigan, moderates panels at HSM conferences, serves as a Michigan History Day judge, and is active with the local Friends of Michigan Library Group. She also conducts local history research with the informal local history group that uses the library’s resources.
- Moderator: Valerie Marvin, Historian & Curator of the Michigan State Capitol (Lansing, MI): Valerie Marvin serves as the Historian & Curator of the Michigan State Capitol, a National Historic Landmark. In this capacity, she oversees the Capitol’s historical collections, and conducts extensive research on Capitol and legislative history, sharing her findings through publications, lectures, and social media. She is a proud graduate of the University of Michigan (Bachelor of Arts in Russian Studies, 2005) and Eastern Michigan University (Masters of Science in Historic Preservation, 2009). She is an active member of the Historical Society of Greater Lansing, the Downtown Lansing Inc. Design Committee, and the Lansing Woman’s Club. Valerie lives with her husband David in a 1906 home in downtown Lansing.

THE STORY OF STUFF PROJECT
THE STORY OF PLASTIC takes a sweeping look at the man-made crisis of plastic pollution and the worldwide effect it has on the health of our planet and the people who inhabit it. Spanning three continents, the film illustrates the ongoing catastrophe: fields full of garbage, veritable mountains of trash, rivers and seas clogged with waste, and skies choked with the poisonous emissions from plastic production and processing.
THE STORY OF PLASTIC features interviews with experts and activists on the front lines of the fight, revealing the disastrous consequences of the flood of plastic smothering ecosystems and poisoning communities around the world, and the global movement that is rising up in response. With engaging original animation, archival industry footage beginning in the 1930s, and first-person accounts of the unfolding emergency, the film distills a complex problem that is increasingly affecting the planet’s and its residents’ well-being.

THREE WAYS TO WATCH
Here’s how you can watch The Story of Plastic, whether you’re an individual viewer or a group interested in organizing around the film:

- BROADCAST (US) – Tune in on Earth Day, April 22, at 2:00 pm on Discovery Channel (same local time on both coasts).
BROADCAST (International) – The Story of Plastic will be broadcast on Discovery network affiliates in 134 countries and territories. Each of those affiliates makes independent programming decisions and announcements. We are working with Discovery to compile those programming details, and will publish them at storyofplastic.org/watch as they come in. You can also check your local Discovery Channel’s programming schedule directly. - DIGITAL – The Story of Plastic will pre-premiere on the DiscoveryGo subscription streaming service on April 15. It will also be available to rent on video-on-demand services like iTunes and Amazon following the April 22 television broadcast.
- VIRTUAL COMMUNITY SCREENINGS – We hope and expect that many members of The Story of Stuff Project community will watch the film by JOINING a virtual screening organized by a group in their region or by HOSTING a virtual screening for your own community. Keep reading for more details about these online events!

VIRTUAL COMMUNITY SCREENINGS
Why virtual? The coronavirus pandemic has halted in-person gatherings for most of the world. However, it hasn’t put a stop to our work as a movement to shift the narrative about plastic pollution and work for solutions to this crisis. Virtual screenings will make it possible to achieve both reach and impact while staying home.
How do virtual screenings work? Virtual screenings will be free to organize and attend. Screening hosts register their event and will be provided with a secure link to stream the film online. This secure link will expire at the end of the viewing window set by the host, or after a maximum of 200 views. Subtitles will be available in Arabic, Bulgarian, Cantonese, Croatian, Danish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Indonesian, Korean, Mandarin (simplified and traditional), Polish, Portuguese (European and Brazilian), Russian, Spanish, Swahili, Tamil, Thai, Turkish, and Vietnamese. To volunteer to create subtitles in a language not listed here, please contact Brett at <brett@storyofstuff.org>.
Screening hosts will manage invitations and RSVPs for their event, and will provide the streaming link to “attendees.” We also ask that hosts also facilitate a discussion, panel, Q&A, or call to action via a group video platform like Zoom. We’ll provide hosts with a more detailed virtual screening organizing guide after they register their event – plus additional resources including Promotional Graphics, an Action Guide, FAQ & Industry Myths, Social Media Toolkit, and Press Kit.
Who can organize a virtual screening? Virtual community screenings are open to everyone! Individuals can organize a virtual screening for their friends and family. Groups can hold a virtual screening for supporters and stakeholders. Teachers can create a virtual screening for their students.Together, we can spread this film’s important messages far and wide!
When will these occur?
Virtual community screenings begin on Earth Day, April 22.
We are focusing our efforts around a “push period”
from Earth Day until World Oceans Day on June 8.
Community screenings will also continue after that date.

STRIKE – Earth Day and Youth Climate Strikes – April 22
On the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, we will demonstrate our collective power and unity through community building and storytelling. This first day will focus on amplifying the voice of indigenous leaders and youth climate activists who are leading the movement to halt the climate crisis
DIVEST – Divestment and Climate Financing – April 23
Led by Stop the Money Pipeline Coalition, during this day of action we are calling for a global reset. We want to reprogram the economy so that it works for people and the planet, not polluters and politicians.
VOTE – Voter Registration and Political Engagement – April 24
We need leaders who will address this existential threat. It’s critical for all of us to show up at the polls this year and vote for our future. So the final day will focus on the importance of voting through a nationwide youth voter registration day.
The US Climate Strike Coalition and Stop The Money Pipeline Coalition, who together are made up of over 500 organizations, have come together to organize Earth Day Live.
The US Climate Strike Coalition is a coalition of over 400 organizations that formed ahead of the September 20, 2019 climate strikes. Led by the leading youth-led climate organizations in the US, the coalition works intergenerationally and collaboratively to coordinate the Climate Strikes in the US.
Stop the Money Pipeline is a coalition of over 100 climate, environmental and Indigneous rights groups that is demanding that the financial sector stops funding the fossil fuel industry and deforestation, and starts respecting Indigenous sovereignty and human rights.

About INNER CLIMATE CHANGE
How do we navigate the intensity of emotions and reactions stirred up by climate change, or COVID-19 for that matter? How do we come to a place of peace, compassion, forgiveness and life-affirming action?
Both leading edge science and ancient wisdom traditions point us inwards for the answer.
In this documentary you will go with us on a journey to see how our inner climate relates to the topic of climate change. And how changing from within will create the change we need.
The INNER CLIMATE CHANGE documentary focuses on the very personal experiences, insights and responses to the climate crisis, of people who participated in the Climate Change and Consciousness conference (CCC19) held in 2019 at the Findhorn Ecovillage in the northeast of Scotland. Conference participants included 350 youngers and elders of multiple ethnicities and diverse genders from 45 countries.

About the filmmaker
The man behind the INNER CLIMATE CHANGE documentary is the independent filmmaker Lorenz Gramann. This is Lorenz’s third feature-length documentary. His last one A New Story for Humanity has been seen over 200.000 times.
Lorenz’s background includes a variety of healing and psychotherapy modalities. He brings the sensitivity garnered in these fields to his film making. Since 2014 he has offered his skills in the northeast of Scotland and currently lives in the Findhorn Foundation Community.

Oscar winner Wes Studi launched a new PSA raising awareness about the seriousness of COVID-19 in Indian Country. (courtesy photo)
ADDISON, Texas — From small-town Oklahoma native to internationally acclaimed actor and musician, Wes Studi forever changed a stereotype with his unforgettable performances in Dances with Wolves, The Last of the Mohicans, Heat and Avatar.
Now, he’s working on another mission.
Yesterday, the Cherokee citizen and legendary film star released a public service announcement (PSA) to raise awareness of the serious effects of COVID-19 in Indian Country and request widespread support for Partnership With Native Americans (PWNA) to ensure Native Americans are not left behind during the pandemic.
What sparked the PSA is a series of vital health issues happening in the wake of COVID-19, even with many stay-at-home orders in place. The risk of contracting the virus is higher among Native Americans due to overcrowded housing and high rates of diabetes, kidney disease and asthma. And despite more than 7,100 confirmed cases of COVID-19 within the Navajo Nation and other tribal communities, federal aid has been slow to arrive.
In his new PSA, the Oscar winner reminds the public of the need for immediate attention and charitable donations to PWNA, which has secured tribal clearances and follows CDC and tribal guidelines to continue delivering critical items, such as food, water, sanitizer and personal protective equipment (PPE).

“Every day, remote reservation communities face shortages of food, water and healthcare, and COVID-19 has magnified that reality,” said Joshua Arce, PWNA president and CEO. “Donations are critical now as we bring relief to under-resourced communities.”
Studi notes PWNA is a nonprofit he trusts. In 2019, they collaborated in a five-part Realities Video Series with Wes Studi that aimed to give an accurate portrayal of reservation life and dispels long-held myths that continue to impact Native communities.

“Waking Up Fabulous: Taking Refuge in The Time of Corona” – A Half-Day LGBTQIA+ Community Retreat
In the midst of this global pandemic, taking refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha has never felt more important for our community and this world. As LGBTQIA+ people, in these challenging and difficult times, we recollect the power of community to know that we are not alone; that together we can begin the healing of centuries of oppression and trauma within a deep knowing of our interconnectedness and interdependence. We learn to trust the unfolding of this life and act for the benefit of all beings.
This virtual retreat is an opportunity to come together and care for ourselves: to remember who we really are and to reconnect with our innate goodness. We will explore ways of sustaining a clear and open mind, a kind heart, and a strong body. And we will engage with the ancient teachings and practices offered by the Buddha that cultivate wisdom, kindness, compassion, joy, equanimity, and skillful actions.
This virtual retreat is for all those who identify as LGBTQIA+. The program will include guided awareness and heart practices, Dharma talks, small and large group sharing, and gentle yoga.
This Virtual Retreat will be conducted on Zoom from 12:30pm – 4:30pm EST on Saturday, May 23. The virtual retreat link will be emailed to participants within twenty-four hours of your registration. Registration for this live webinar closes at 11:30am EST on May 23.
In keeping with the tradition of offering these teachings by dana, there are no fees associated with this retreat, it is by donation only. We invite you to consider making a tax-deductible contribution during the registration process. Teachers:
Madeline Klyne has loved the dharma since 1986. She is a co-founder and teacher of South Shore Insight Meditation Center (SSIMC), a core teacher at Cambridge Insight Meditation Center (CIMC), and a visiting teacher at Insight Meditation Society. Madeline teaches programs and retreats for LGBTIQ communities. Part of Madeline’s spiritual path was to come out at the age of 5. La Sarmiento has been practicing Vipassana meditation since 1998, is a teacher and senior retreat/event manager for the Insight Meditation Community of Washington, and has been the guiding teacher of the IMCW LGBTQ and People of Color Sanghas since 2006. A 2012 graduate of the Spirit Rock Community Dharma Leaders Training Program, they also lead mindfulness retreats for teenagers with Inward Bound Mindfulness Education and retreats for Young Adults at the Spirit Rock Meditation Center. This will be La’s 5th retreat at Garrison for the LGBTIQ community. La has been a bodyworker in private practice since 1992 and a Reiki Teacher since 2004 in Washington, DC, where they reside with their life partner Wendy and their two Cairn Terriers, Annabel and MacGregor.
Lama Rod Owens is considered one of the emerging leaders of his generation of Buddhist teachers. An author, activist, and formally authorized Buddhist teacher in the Tibetan tradition of Buddhism, he is the co-founder of Bhumisparsha, a Buddhist tantric practice community as well as a visiting teacher with several Buddhist centers including the Natural Dharma Fellowship and the Brooklyn Zen Center. A graduate of Harvard Divinity School, Lama Rod has also been a guest faculty member at the Harvard School of Education’s program Mindfulness for Educators. He has been a regular guest on SiriusXM’s Urban Viewhosted by Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Karen Hunter. He is also a co-author of Radical Dharma: Talking Race, Love, and Liberation and his next book project “Love & Rage” exploring transformative anger and rage is due out June 2020. Jacoby Ballard has been teaching yoga for 20 years and now lives in Salt Lake City, Utah with his partner and child. His work sits at the intersection of spiritual practice and social change and has led him to consult with Insight Meditation Society, the Yoga Alliance, Lululemon, and speaking on college campuses. His current foray into study and taking the role of student is through his enrollment with the Community Dharma Leaders program at Spirit Rock. Isabel Adon, LCSW, FOT, IFOT is a Bilingual Psychotherapist with an Office in Midtown, NYC. Isabel Adon is an Aboriginal Focusing Oriented Therapist and Trainer. She has over 20 years of experience in the mental health and presently works with children and families in an outpatient psychiatric setting in the Bronx. Isabel has been a volunteer rape crisis and domestic violence advocate for over nine years responding to crisis at six different NYC emergency rooms as a volunteer for the Mount Sinai SAVI program. She has extensive training in diversity work and for the past 15 years has been a practitioner of Vipassana and Ascension meditation.

An Anishinaabe Prophecies, this time is known as the 7th Fire. The prophecy says that to move to the 8th Fire, we face a choice between two paths. One path is well-worn, scorched, and leads to our destruct.ion. The other path is new, green, and leads to Mino-Bimaadiziwin (the good life)
Join us as internationally-renowned activist and author Winona LaDuke – an Anishinaabekwe (Ojibwe) member of the White Earth Nation – discusses how the pandemic provides us with an opportunity to walk a new path, taking care of each other, and our Mother Earth.
Crisis can bring out the best or the worst in communities. Winona will discuss what it’s going to take to herald in a restorative, regenerative, and just society, one where we appreciate each other, localize our economy, get cleaner, and healthier.

Winona LaDuke is one of the world’s most tireless and charismatic leaders on issues related to climate change, Indigenous rights, human rights, green and rural economies, food justice, alternative sources of energy, and the priceless value of clean water over a career spanning nearly 40 years of activism. She is Program Director of Honor the Earth, the founder of the White Earth Land Recovery Project, and Winona’s Hemp and Heritage Farm. A graduate of Harvard and Antioch Universities, she is the author of five books, including Recovering the Sacred, All our Relations and a novel, Last Standing Woman.
TICKETS ARE SLIDING SCALE $5 – $25 to benefit speakers and artists impacted by the cancellation of events due to the pandemic. All who register will receive a link to watch live or later at their own convenience.

Join Us for Climate Tea & Talk – 2nd Tuesday of the Month at 6:00 PM (ET) | 3:00 PM (PT)
Indigi-Aid, a live-stream event benefiting indigenous communities as a response to the Covid-19 crisis, will take place Thursday, June 11th from 5 to 9 pm eastern time. Artists and musicians from diverse indigenous and other communities around the United States will offer songs, dance, and storytelling.
As the Coronavirus has ravaged the Indigenous communities and threatened to inflict severe health casualties in Navajoland and many other Indigenous Nations, the Indigenous Ministries of the Episcopal Church has partnered with the Episcopal Diocese of Northern Michigan and scores of many Episcopal communities to raise money for food, basic need items, water, and medical supplies to aid our Indigenous communities across the Episcopal Church.
In addition to the performances, we ask our friends to share a 15 to 30-second message of hope and support to our Indigenous communities with the hashtag #indigi-aid. You can message us your support short support video.

During these changing times we are living in, we will come together in non-traditional ways to share the Grandmothers’ messages.
These Online teachings will be held on a regular bi-weekly basis, starting this Sunday (June 14).
The Grandmothers want us to know how vitally important each of us is, as we anchor the Net of Light where we live.
The Grandmothers say, “No one comes to this work unless we call them,” so, if they are calling you, join us.
Many more are being called into this work in these times, and we fully embrace all who step forward through this online medium.
