ROOTED in PEACE – Film Screening/Nat’l Conversation Around Peace @ Laemmle Town Center 5
Sep 19 @ 7:00 pm

In celebration of the upcoming International Day of Peace, September 21st, we are hosting Greg Reitman’s ROOTED in PEACE – a globally transformative, socially-conscious, environmentally-based film. Reitman’s journey of self-analysis resonates with audiences seeking inner peace in a world full of people dominated by war, affected by global warming or haunted by inner conflict. The film follows him as he speaks to thought leaders around the world having conversations around sustainable development, discussing the challenges of our never-ending wars, and facing the realities of uncertainty placed on the world’s institutions by our current political climate. Reitman’s introspective and socially relevant documentary was most recently screened at the United Nations.

From the US to Costa Rica to India, award-winning filmmaker and environmental activist Greg Reitman traveled to visit such luminaries and activists as Deepak Chopra, music legends Donovan, Mike Love and Pete Seeger, film director David Lynch, Nobel Peace Laureate Mairead Maguire, Ted Turner, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and many others. Their common ideas and examples make ROOTED in PEACE an unexpectedly inspirational viewing experience magnified by a stellar soundtrack opening with Pink Floyd’s ‘Time’ and closing with John Lennon’s ‘Love.’

Sankofa: Reclaiming relevant indigenous cultural and ancestral values to make a case for nature-based solutions

The chieftaincy, elders and people of Funko community-located in the Western Region of Ghana- honored World Water Day by creating awareness about the need for circumspection when adopting vices or policies which consequently cause public health problems and are detrimental to the environment. Illegal/unsustainable mining – popularly referred to as “Galamsey”in the country- and fringe activities which indirectly empower the practice are examples of such vices.

The Funko community is close to the Ankobra river and, symbolic of the strong inter-connectivity still existent between most societies and their natural environment. This river is an important source of drinking water for many communities in the Western Region of Ghana- and beyond- but continues to be polluted through illegal mining activities. It flows at least 120 km south to the Gulf of Guinea (Atlantic) and is located very close to the western part of Axim, a commercial center of the river basin.

In celebrating this important day, we sought to highlight the important role some historic cultural practices (spoken word, dancing and drumming) and community dialogues can play in influencing the re-adaptation of relevant conservation values which were more commonly applied by the ancestors. Overall, the concept of Sankofa is espoused. Sankofa is a Ghanaian-originated cultural principle which literally means to take back what was lost in order to protect the future. This -arguably- manifests the tenets of sustainability. There are many of such doctrines in many communities across the world.

The principle teaches communities the importance of going back to their roots- and reclaiming worthy values- in order to move forward. For example, the indigenous and unadulterated local anthropological cognition reveres some key natural receptors – such as rivers, wetlands and forests- as deities. By tapping into the novelty of such values, the current mega trend of sustainability would be well anchored and in a way which significantly addresses most of the conservation, food security and sub regional stability challenges existent now. A cultural dance and community dialogue were among the activities undertaken to commemorate the day.

On World Water Day, the funding partner and collaborator for the performances –who is also the founder of Windhouse Resources Systems (WRS)- would reach out to stakeholders to solicit input on case studies concepts intended to be develop in order to make a stronger case for nature-based solutions. WRS is a boutique sustainability consultancy located in Ghana – West Africa.

EarthX Presents the World’s Largest Environmental Expo, Conference and Film Festival in Dallas

With a mission to connect the global community to create a sustainable world for all life and future generations, Texas-based nonprofit EarthX is hosting the world’s largest environmental expo, conference and film festival from April 13-22, 2018, at locations throughout Dallas.

The EarthX three-day expo, five-day group of conferences and 10-day film festival champions progress and innovation by bringing together environmental organizations, businesses, academic institutions, government agencies, interactive programming and thought leaders. The event also fosters celebration with interactive and immersive family entertainment, live music and sustainable food pavilions.

Founded in 2011 by Dallas-based environmentalist and businessman Trammell S. Crow, EarthX, formerly known as Earth Day Texas, began as an outdoor event spanning five blocks of Flora Street in the Dallas Arts District. It has grown to occupy approximately 1/2 million square feet of indoor and outdoor event space in Dallas’ historic Fair Park. In 2017, the event drew 116,000 attendees, 800 exhibitors, more than 250 speakers. Approximately 1,200 volunteers will be needed to put on the massive event this year. Visit earthx.org to register for the 2018 event and receive free admission.

“While we didn’t come up with the initial idea of a pro-business Earth Day, we ran with it and grew it into the world’s largest gathering of its kind,” said Trammell S. Crow, founder of EarthX. “International environmentalists, elected officials, investors, business leaders, educators and families are coming to EarthX in Dallas for an array of conservation-focused offerings, exhibits, films and conferences, where Earth is our common ground.”

Confirmed, renowned speakers in their areas of expertise for EarthX 2018 include astronaut Buzz Aldrin, Dr. Sylvia Earle, Mission Blue; James Baker, Former Secretary of State; John Kasich, Governor of Ohio; Susan Eisenhower, Presidential Blue Ribbon Nuclear Commission; Academy-Award winner Louie Psihoyos; Paul Watson, Sea Shepherd; mayors of Phoenix, San Antonio and other cities; Dr. Ved Chirayath, Director of Laboratory for Advanced Sensing in the Earth Science Division at NASA Ames Silicon Valley; as well as representatives from National Laboratories.

EarthX features five days of conferences from April 18-22.  E-Capital Summit will convene mission-driven investors, incubators, accelerators, researchers and breakthrough clean technology innovators from around the world to form partnerships having substantial, positive impacts on profits, people and the planet. EarthxHack, a 24-hour event, is the world’s largest environmental hackathon, sitting at the intersection of innovation, technology and the environment. The platform will create groundbreaking solutions by utilizing the brightest technical minds of today focusing on the problems of tomorrow.  New for 2018, EarthxSolar will bring together change-makers in the business world and in solar energy. Other conferences, including EarthxOceanEarthxResponsibleOilandGasEarthxBridge Summit and EarthxPolicy: Energy Done Right, will encompass educational, municipal and environmental efforts.

Exhibitors of EarthxExpo, taking place at Fair Park April 20-22, include The National Audubon Society, Greenpeace, and The Plastic Soup Foundation, a nonprofit focused on reducing ocean plastic from Amsterdam, NL.  EarthX has partnered with Trees for the Future to plant as many trees as possible in five African countries during the expo as well as with The Great Seed Bomb and City of Dallas for the weekend-long Seed Bomb Blowout to help increase vital pollinator habitat here at home. In addition, Oncor will showcase the new Nissan Leaf with examples of EV charging stations, UPS is bringing its interactive education trailer on alternative fuel transportation, and TxDOT’s Don’t Mess with Texas Program offers an interactive virtual reality game about litter prevention.

EarthxExpo attendees can experience a wide range of educational and interactive activities for the whole family during the three-day event. There is plenty to do and see focused on sustainability and green living, from an Outdoor Adventure Zone featuring scuba diving to tree climbing and goat yoga and an Interactive Zone with virtual and mixed reality, to exploring a Tiny House Village or enjoying the Eco Auto Show, E-Bike track and science education trucks.

Prior to the launch of the expo and conferences, EarthxFilm will commence on April 13 and run through April 22. EarthxFilm uses the power of film and emerging media to raise awareness of global environmental issues. Over 10 days, EarthxFilm will present over 60 features and shorts at screenings and events across the city.  EarthxFilm’s educational components include Youth Online Filmmaking Competitions (open now), in-school screenings and hands-on workshops at EarthX. An EarthxFilm Awards Ceremony will be held on the last day of the festival, Sunday, April 22.

On Friday, April 20, EarthxGlobalGala will be a star-studded evening event that honors visionary leaders in environmental education, film and television.  The Global Impact Awards will be given during this fascinating, fun and interactive night at the Perot Museum of Science and Technology.

Join others for 15 glorious minutes of Laughter Yoga on the phone as we celebrate 11 Days of Global Unity! Today, we culminate these 11 days as we mark the UN International Day of Peace. When Dr. Kataria, founder of Laughter Yoga, began spreading his vision of sharing intentional laughter, he recognized that Laughter is a universal language and since its founding in 1995, he has hoped others will share his vision of using shared intentional laughter to help the world find peace. I’m SURE I’ve enjoyed laughing with each and every person who has called in during the 11 Days of Global Unity. On this, our last call of this series, we will focus on Laughter Exercises that envision a more peaceful world. As always: no previous experience, no special clothes or equipment required. CALL: +1-218-339-2460 CODE: 52844# (LAUGH#) We’ll start with SMILE-UPsSM and get the giggles with silly, playful LAUGHTER exercises that help unite us as we decrease stress, anxiety and depression, increase joy, connection, creativity, energy, focus and productivity. Also NOTE: Sarah continues these Laughter Calls every MONDAY MORNING at 9am Central Standard Time for 15 minutes. You are always invited! Thanks for joining the fun as we all work together to find a more unified, and much more peaceful world, one big smile and one shared laugh at a time!

A Wildness RemainsUpriver, channels diverge and a unique habitat of small islands and wetlands cry out for preservation. Here, mink, otter, and beaver live along the shore. Though huge container ships plow through the dredged, deep-water channel, this slow, low-lying stretch of the river is a link back to an earlier time. It offers a chance to re-discover our intimate relationship to the natural world.

Leave No TraceIt’s in the quiet of the river that we get an inkling of how Native Americans lived: trapping fish, building small disposable dwellings, carefully observing the plants and wildlife. We no longer weave fishnets out of bark or make hooks out of deer bone, but just as the Lenape survived by adjusting their lives to the river’s, we’re beginning to understand that we need to respect, not dominate, the environment around us.

Preserve HabitatsThe decline of the bald eagle in the Hudson Valley was a direct result of human interference: from the use of pesticides to the destruction of habitat. And it’s humans who are helping to bring the eagle back. Riverkeeper works with scientists and government agencies to reduce pollution, preserve nesting sites, and protect the eagle’s main source of food, fish.

Tree of Peace & Reconciliation Tree Planting with Drawdown Markham @ Fly High Farm and Gardens

In cooperation with the WE-Energime-Global Cooperation Turtle Island International Civil Society Organization and in support of peaceful interfaith dialogue, especially in light of Laudato Si, the recent message from Pope Francis on “Care for Mother Earth”, Drawdown Markham will be assisting Global Cooperation Day (GCD, New Zealand) to Celebrate the 800 year Anniversary (in 2019) of the meeting between Saint Francis of Assisi and Sultan Al Kamil in the year 1219 by planting a *Commemorative Tree of Peace* on a property in the East end of Markham (Locust Hill) on Sunday, September 15th.

This event is being done in support of the DD Markham CCAH Collaborative Exchange Project (CEP) and the “Spark for Humanity” project by We Are Mother Earth! (WAME) and GTI Enterprises (cooperative corporation), and for the eventual establishment of our “Go Local” Campaign for community resilience and adaptation, supported by our local Drawdown Markham Interfaith Neighborhood and Business Collaborative (which is part of the EncounterCanada collaborative, which is intended “to localize the Sustainable Development Goals to build ‘Climate Smart’ safe and sustainable communities and cities, pursuant to the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction”).

“We hear Mother Earth’s call to simultaneously become more heart centered and action oriented.  Feeling Mother Earth’s sacredness in our hearts can be profound motivation to act on Her behalf.  Many actions are needed now, from calling legislators to attending rallies … art making, creative planning, spreading the word, writing letters to the editor … advocating for clean water, renewable energy … as well as social, racial, and economic justice issues that are inseparable from co-creating a sustainable, thriving world that works for all.  We believe these actions are most effective, and most beautiful, when they are inspired by and carried out with love and respect for this beautiful planet, all who reside here, and whatever divine energies are loving us and encouraging us through this Great Turning.  This feeling of connection, love, and inspiration is what we seek to create through Planet Heart’s Annual World Peace Earth Day.  Please join us, be inspired, keep your heart open, and channel that love into action. ”
